Why Our Prayers Are Brief…

Pastor's PenOur prayers are short because all we do is ask and petition. We haven’t learned how to be grateful to God. Start your prayer with gratitude and let it be the first words on your lips each morning. It will change the way you see others and circumstances.

1. “Thank God without ceasing…” 1 Thess. 1:3
2. “At midnight I will give thanks to thee…” Psalm 119:62
3. “First, I thank my God…” Romans 1:8
4. “I offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving…” Psalm 107:22


*It is said the Pilgrims set five grains of corn by each plate for a long time as a reminder of their hard times. Every meal before eating they would stare at the five grains which reminded them of their daily ration and hard times of hunger God brought them through.


Idea: Sit something by your plate or food to remind you and your guest of the blessings God has given us. We will use Malawi, Africa pictures around our table. There is a drought, famine, no food and no help except as we pray for them. What is yours?

Count Your Blessings

“Count Your Blessings”…

It was written by Johnson Oatman in 1897. It was a favorite hymn in London. The Preacher Gypsy Smith said of the song, “Men sing it, women hum it, mothers rock their babies to sleep by it, boys whistle it and an attitude of gratitude is seen throughout the city.” Listen to these affirming words:
“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, do not be discouraged thinking all is lost; Count your many blessings name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.”


1 Thess. 5:18
“In everything (not for everything) give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”


Maybe if we had one day a year we could belly ache, gripe, whine, complain and be audaciously ungrateful, we could give the other 364 to God. Hope we haven’t turned that around?


If I started naming my blessings by name, this would be so long you would drift off reading it. To my Lord Gratitude, to my family thanks, to my wife a bow of love, to my church I say thank you and love you and to my dear friends, you are so precious to me.

The Magician

The rabbit in the hat and the card up the sleeve;
The long curled mustache on the man the magic weaves.
A dark suit fitted with lacy white cuffs;
The eyes reveal a confidence that he knows his stuff.

The consummate entertainer who serves the Lord;
By the slight of hand delivered and you won’t be bored.
Known as the “Great Hamptini”, back in the day;
Watch the children’s faces as he makes his magic play.

We aged along the hi-way of life that sped by-
We watch the magic disappear as we cease to ask,”Why?”.
“How did he do that”, hung on people’s lips;
The colors of the scarfs and the white glove that grips.

But I will remember the magic with Lovey by his side;
And smile on the audience as Hamptini was in his stride.

For the heart that Christ has saved is the truth he received.

Heaven’s Love Offered

Broken humanity needs mending…

A tender hand reaches toward a leprous community and offers healing. A strong arm offers defense for an abused child in a Galilean sea of tears. The frankincense of grace is poured over a homeless mans matted head to warm the lonely soul.

A single mother finds love wrapped in the alabaster box of a carpenters heart and earth cannot contain her joy. The prisoner stares into a concrete wall in the darkness and the most beautiful eyes appear to guide him into the peace with a glorious light shining.

The offering of heaven came in a manger carrying the deed of our soul in His tiny hands to redeem us from a tomb of death. Yes, the offering was free but the choice is brittle, and snaps at the will of every man to accept or reject.

Gods hands extended with a whisper of a still small voice to come. Heavens gift is offered to the mass of humanity but not a cold religion, no! A warm eternal relationship with the Father. Come. Amen Lord Jesus, come.

When the Wind Blows

When the wind blows the leaves in mass begin to soar;
A sense of cold seeps around my front door.
The cattle are huddled where in the tall grass they feed;
And not an insect is crawling, in their burrows they take heed.
When the wind blows the coat is wrapped tighter;
With gloves on the hands, I sure look a “sighter!”
In Oklahoma we withstand the cold and heat;
From 15 below or 105 degrees we can defeat.
Let the snow pile up and the flood waters roll;
The pelting of hail on roofs and the earthquakes big holes.
But make no mistake, these 45 mile an hour winds,
Send us inside till they lay low again!

Biscuits and sausage gravy and sausage and scrambled eggs with hot coffee and cold juice. All cooked to perfection by Lee Mullendore and Gary Carlisle. Read it. Read it again. Read it once more. Do you get the positive flow? You get to choose what you will think about. These things are all around us but we often are whining, murmuring, complaining, criticizing, being negative and being a Debbie Downer and can’t see God working.

It’s not whether the glass is seen as half empty or half full but are we half empty or half full. Some conversations are so laced with criticisms and verbal dumping, that love and grace of God are hidden the garbage heap of “Woe is me!”. Lord, forgive me and make me a joyous believer by my actions and attitudes.

“Show me where you brought me from and where I could have been; remind me; remind me, O’ Lord!” pretty good old song.

Thanksgiving Meal… AWESOME!

larrysparksThank you kitchen crew for the work of feeding over 200 plus hungry Baptist. There was such joy in the room and the food was much and so delicious that I over ate. How do I know? They asked me to play all three Wise Men in the Christmas program. Last was worse, I was Bethlehem! Lol
Blackburn Chapel is a loving, growing and Christ centered church. You have to be here Sunday for several more baptisms and vibrant worship. Let’s fill the house of God!
