The Bible… The Book… The Word of God

Pastor Larry SparksIt is the precious old Book my mother read, quoted, shared and dictated the moral direction of her life.I have seen it in every foreign country where I have traveled, perched on lamp table with Gideon stamp on it. I have read all 66 books in the one perfect volume, the Bible. I have met shepherd boy kings, powerful prophets, talking donkeys, fiery chariots and the Savior of the world Jesus Christ.

It has taught me about life and prepared me for death. The Bible has taught me to save and how to give. It has taught me about the beginning and described in detail the end of all things. The 39 books of the Old Testament revealed the laws of nature set by God and records the laws of His word printed for man.

The 27 books of the New Testament teach how the God who made man in His own image, made himself in mans image and entered the human stream of events to die for our sins. There are Gospels and letters, disciples and demons, a baby in a animal trough and a King on a white steed coming to close out the age.

The Bible is the most criticized, scrutinized, loved and hated, ignored and quoted piece of literature ever written. Over 40 writers under the inspiration of the Spirit penned words they didn’t always understand. A period of nearly 1500 years were spanned to collect and connect these truths known as the holy Bible, Gods word.

It does little good to have one and not read it. More important than what others say about is what it says to you. It is bread to the hungry, water to the thirsty, a staff to the weak to lean on, a road map to the pilgrim, an instruction manual for the student and for the seeker of truth satisfaction.

I love this Book. I know it’s Author. I trust it’s content. I am blessed by its comforting words.
It is time for my Bible reading and again, refreshment for my soul.

The Paradox…

Pastor Larry SparksHow did this happen?

When did the King become our servant and we do the “beck and call” thing.

We live in the name it and claim it society of entitlements, which has now lapped over to church. He does promise to take care of us who are His children BUT, we are to take up our own cross and follow Him. So, the term, Lord, should rest on Him and the title servant, son, soldier should rest on us.

The TV preachers are making a mint on “Feel good and let Him wait on you” theology. However, that is not missions, evangelism, ministry and discipleship. Listen to this:

  1. My sheep know my voice and they follow ME.
  2. Deny yourself and take up your own cross and follow ME.
  3. I am the vine you are the branches…he will bear much fruit if he abides in ME.
  4. Go you therefore and teach, preach and make disciples…
  5. I have fought the good fight, finished my course, kept the faith.

You get the idea?

In spite of the paradox, we are to obey and follow HIM. Read closely the gospels and see your role clearly. He will care for you so you are free to serve HIM.

-Br. Larry… Cross on shoulder, off to the “uttermost parts” to serve HIM.

Morning Bible Study Thoughts…

Russell RamseyAs I’m preparing for my first full week at my new job, this morning’s Bible study was powerful to me. I’m reading “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers, and this is an excerpt I’d like to share. I’m enjoying this because it challenges me to delve deeper.

Look Again And Consecrate

A simple statement of Jesus is always a puzzle to us because we will not be simple. How can we maintain the simplicity of Jesus so that we may understand Him? By receiving His Spirit, recognizing and relying on Him, and obeying Him as He brings us the truth of His Word, life will become amazingly simple. Jesus asks us to consider that “if God so clothes the grass of the field . . .” how “much more” will He clothe you, if you keep your relationship right with Him? Every time we lose ground in our fellowship with God, it is because we have disrespectfully thought that we knew better than Jesus Christ. We have allowed “the cares of this world” to enter in (Matthew 13:22), while forgetting the “much more” of our heavenly Father.

“Look at the birds of the air . . .” (6:26). Their function is to obey the instincts God placed within them, and God watches over them. Jesus said that if you have the right relationship with Him and will obey His Spirit within you, then God will care for your “feathers” too.

“Consider the lilies of the field . . .” (6:28). They grow where they are planted. Many of us refuse to grow where God plants us. Therefore, we don’t take root anywhere. Jesus said if we would obey the life of God within us, He would look after all other things. Did Jesus Christ lie to us? Are we experiencing the “much more” He promised? If we are not, it is because we are not obeying the life God has given us and have cluttered our minds with confusing thoughts and worries. How much time have we wasted asking God senseless questions while we should be absolutely free to concentrate on our service to Him? Consecration is the act of continually separating myself from everything except that which God has appointed me to do. It is not a onetime experience but an ongoing process. Am I continually separating myself and looking to God every day of my life?

O Lord, I praise You for the revelation of Your supreme Fatherhood that dawns on me through the grace of the Lord Jesus. Oh, that I may be the child of my Father in heaven!

I long for these intangible things…

Honor in the character of men…
Truth from the lips of leaders…
Revival in the church today
Morality in the lives of people…
Respect from our young folk…
A dream once again of future…
The burial of drugs in America…
Families in unity and love…
Contentment with life’s gifts…
Verbal personal connections…
Debt free in our nation again…
Appreciation for our military…
Unity among all races forever…
Restoration of Christian ways…
Trust in our government…
Honesty and integrity as the principles of rulers we elect…
Prayer unashamedly voiced in classrooms and civic meetings…
The elderly cherished for the legacy they have given us…
Greed banished once and for all and replaced with mercy…

*Really, we must aim high and not compromise in Gods goals.

The Grind of Human Kind

Pastor Larry SparksIt is not a particular event that forms the sudden back break of misery and pain but the daily back pack that grows heavier as the body grows weaker. Abraham left country and kin for the mysterious land of promise but it was a 700 mile walk on a hot dusty unmarked trail. I can hear him asking God, “Are we there yet?” but God said, “Keep walking old friend.”. Our problems and crisis slowly shape us in attitude and perspective on this grind of human kinds daily trek through the weighty issues of life.

The Apostle Paul was besieged by a thorn in the flesh, a crippling curse of either eyesight or back pain or the messenger of Satan sent to buffet him in that unnamed area of life. He went to the welfare window of prayer three times but the response was the same, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 1 Corinthians 12:9. So, to answer the Grind of Humankind is the Grace of God displayed each day at the First Aid Station of Prayer. No wonder Paul could say to the church to be; “Steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain.” 1 Cor. 15:58.

The Grind of Humankind will never cease here but neither will the all sufficient Grace of God to His children. This promise is not made to the world at large but only to God’s family and to those of His children that walk in this GRACE daily. Adjust your back pack and keep moving. He has got your back covered.

Daily reflections from my journey…

Keep Looking Up…

Pastor Larry SparksSometimes the road seems rugged and certainly disrupts,
But I remember the Lords promise, so I keep looking up.

Illness in the body, then meds to take with measured cup;
But one day He is coming back, so keep looking up!

The chalice on earth can be bitter, with each tiny sup;
But I am focused on heaven too, so keep looking up.

The Father is always watching and one day He’ll say enough!
Son, go get Your Bride now, see their eyes looking up?

The saints of all the ages are watching for Him to be found;
A descent in the white clouds, our King is coming down!!!

The Gravestones Tell A Story

The dates etched in granite stone,
With the dash separating the years;
A life involved in that small space,
The name above boldly appears.

A Scripture verse is silently quoted,
Upon the cold smooth rock;
The plastic flowers say someone came,
But gone to the eternal flock.

The writing carries the name, Mother;
With the caption, “Mom we love you!”
A simple cross crowns the top,
Four score and then a few.

A concrete bench near the grave sets,
Chiseled patterns you know she chose;
The Oak tree limbs stretch over the bench,
As this evening comes to a close.

New earth placed in the yonder mound,
To replace that blanket of dirt that fell;
Just one grave in a field of hundreds,
Each one has its own story to tell.
